In January of this year, the School Nutrition Foundation (SNF) partnered with three other leading nutrition and education nonprofit organizations – the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC), National Association of Elementary School Principals Foundation (NAESP), and the National Education Association Health Information Network (NEA HIN) – to form Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom. With a generous $3.15 million grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation, SNF was able to launch the Breakfast in the Classroom initiative.
Five districts were chosen from across the United States to participate in the pilot Breakfast in the Classroom program:
· Dallas Independent School District (Texas)
· Little Rock School District (Arkansas)
· Memphis City Schools (Tennessee)
· Orange County Public Schools (Florida)
· Prince George’s County Public Schools (Maryland)
Because of Breakfast in the Classroom, 15,000 additional children in these districts are now able to have a nutritious morning meal to get them ready to learn.
The Global Child Nutrition Foundation and the School Nutrition Foundation are branches of the School Nutrition Association. SNF has a major focus on financial aid, education, professional development, and research in school food service – resources that equip SNA members to efficiently serve nutritious meals to millions of school children each year throughout the United States.
