The Government of Malawi has allocated MWK 500,192,996 (USD 3,330,126.59) to the Department of School Health, Nutrition and HIV and AIDS in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, for the implementation of a national school meals program. The budget session is currently in progress in the Parliament.

The first phase of the program will focus on integrating either locally sourced foods or growing a school farm/garden. The Ministry has proposed the implementation of the school meals program to begin in the second term of the 2011-2012 school year. The Ministry is also requesting assistance from the World Food Programme to support the plan development and has reached out to the Boston Consulting Group for further guidance to finalize the implementation plan.
