GCNF’s Mickey Leland Fellow and a companion from the Congressional Hunger Center traveled to Mali to complete research into their school feeding best practices. The completed case study focuses on the themes of community commitment and political will toward the Malian school feeding programs. School feeding initiatives, referred to as “canteens” in Mali, are essential to the growth of the Malian economy and the good health of future generations. The Malian government and community play vital roles in coordinating and providing staples for food assisted-education programs. However, the need to support and maintain these programs is still prevalent, making GCNF an integral partner to their success.
Valuable contributions to Malian school feeding programs have been made by a variety of organizations including the UN World Food Programme (WFP), Catholic Relief Services (CRS), and other organizations engaged in efforts to alleviate food insecurity. Even so, the thorough research and results from this country study serve as a reminder that school feeding in Mali is insufficient compared to their needs. Furthermore, it addresses just one of the many challenges facing primary and secondary education in the nation.
