NATIONAL HARBOR, MD – Several noted political dignitaries will be on hand to honor Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) as he is presented with the Gene White Lifetime Achievement Award for Child Nutrition.
Senator Lugar, a long-time champion of child nutrition causes worldwide, will be honored by the Global Child Nutrition Foundation at the non-profit’s annual A Possible Dream Gala scheduled for Monday, March 7, 2011 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC. Expected guests include:
- Former Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman
- Senator Robert Casey, Jr. (D-PA)
- USAID Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah

The Gene White Lifetime Achievement Award for Child Nutrition is presented each year to an individual whose work has made significant strides toward helping the world’s poorest children receive adequate nutrition so they may thrive and reach their full potential. Past recipients of the award include: Senators George McGovern and Bob Dole, Dr. Josephine Martin, the Honorable Catherine Bertini, Edward Cooney, Marshall Matz and the Honorable Dan Glickman. This year’s Honorary Gala Co-Chairs are Senators Pat Roberts (R-KS) and Debbie Stebanow (D-MI).
The Global Child Nutrition Foundation (GCNF), established in 2006 as the international arm of the School Nutrition Association (SNA), is a 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to helping developing countries build sustainable, country-owned and operated school feeding programs by sharing best practices, providing technical assistance and education, applying research, developing policy and organizing annual Global Forums on school feeding programs. GCNF’s work is organized in three areas: technical assistance and training; research and special studies; and communications and network building.
