The government of Kenya has distributed Sh17.7 million for home grown school feeding (HGSF) programs in the Mwala District in Machakos County, an area that Global Child Nutrition Forum attendees visited during the school feeding field trip in early May.
Out of the total Sh17.7 million, Sh7.3 million went to 40 schools in Yathui and Kibauni, under the home grown feeding program. The District of Education Officer, Rose Sagara, said the two divisions are given priority because they are prone to food insecurity. “Sh5.2 million was availed during the first term and Sh2.1 million during the second term, to cater for meals for pupils from vulnerable families”. These funds will allot Sh10 per child per day for school meals.
An additional Sh10.4 million was allocated for the Emergency Expanded School Meals Programme, which helps supplement the home grown school feeding initiative to cover 134 additional primary schools.
