In February, GCNF President Gene White and GCNF Board member Stan Garnett met with local industry representatives from By-health Biotechnology Co., Ltd. in Guangzhou, China to discuss the feasibility of implementing a three-year pilot school feeding program in China.  This exploratory visit responded to the organization’s initial request in November 2010 to help expand school feeding operations in some of Guangzhou Province’s impoverished rural areas.

As part of its corporate social responsibility program, By-health collaborates with the non-profit group China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF) to realize “Project Hope.”  Project Hope is the flagship program of CYDF and has built over 12,000 primary schools for children in rural communities.  CYDF demonstrates that the non-profit sector is steadily growing in China.

Beginning September 2011, GCNF and By-health will together pilot a nutritious school feeding program at select Hope Schools in Guangzhou.  A needs assessment previously conducted by GCNF in Sichuan Province, China in 2009 will provide valuable guidance for the project’s initiation.
