GCNF’s annual A Possible Dream Gala honors outstanding champions of child nutrition. Each year, three awards are granted: the Gene White Lifetime Achievement Award for Child Nutrition; the School Nutrition Association (SNA) Individual Industry Member of the Year; and the SNA Outstanding Director of the Year. More than 600 executives came together—from industry, SNA, international non-profits, the U.S. Congress, USAID, USDA, and other key agencies working to reduce hunger—to network, exchange ideas and raise funds for this important cause. The Gala raises awareness of global hunger and helps GCNF build sustainable school feeding projects in developing countries.
The Gene White Lifetime Achievement Award for Child Nutrition is presented each year to an individual whose work has made significant strides toward helping the world’s poorest children receive adequate nutrition so they may thrive and reach their full potential. Past recipients of the award include: Senators George McGovern and Bob Dole, Dr. Josephine Martin, the Honorable Catherine Bertini, Edward Cooney, Marshall Matz and the Honorable Dan Glickman.
This year, several noted political dignitaries were on hand to honor Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) as he was presented with the Gene White Lifetime Achievement Award for Child Nutrition on Monday, March 7, 2011.
Senators Pat Roberts (R-KS) and Debbie Stebanow (D-MI) served as a Honorary Gala Co-Chairs. USAID Administrator, Dr. Rajiv Shah, spoke and Senator Bob Casey, Jr. offered congratulatory remarks. Dan Glickman, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Susan Neely, a GCNF Board member and American Beverage Association President & CEO, were the Masters of Ceremonies.
This event would not be possible without the tireless efforts of the GCNF Board of Directors, especially Co-Chairs Susan Neely and Jim Clough. At the time this edition went to press, the Committee aided in raising more than $325,000 for global child nutrition.
