Planning is underway to hold the 13th annual Global Child Nutrition Forum in Nairobi, Kenya May 3-7, 2011.  For the second year in a row, the Forum will be co-hosted with the Partnership for Child Development (PCD), a global consortium dedicated to improving the education, health and nutrition of youth and school-age children in low and middle income countries.

The purpose of the Forum is to help leaders from developing and transitional countries launch or expand school feeding programs.  In addition to these country delegates, observers from the private sector, non-profit organizations and private voluntary organizations attend so they can engage in school feeding dialogue and share important information with their respective organizations.  Invitations to the Global Child Nutrition Forum are limited and by invitation only.

The meeting will take place at the Hilton Nairobi in Kenya’s capital city.  This year’s agenda will focus on linking school feeding programs to local agricultural production.  It is through this linkage that a stable market can be created for farmers and children can benefit from nutritious, locally sourced food items.  Although program speakers and participants are still being identified, there will be a strong emphasis to include African countries and partnership-based organizations in Africa –such as the Alliance for a Green Revolution in African– that are committed to improving child health and bolstering the local economy.  The Forum will conclude with an intensive two-day workshop in which GCNF’s School Feeding Toolkit: A Resource for Assessing Needs and Planning Sustainable School Feeding Programs will help country leaders create plans for a sustainable school feeding program.

I think the conference is very essential and i am interested to participate in it. I did my first degree in Nutrition and Food Science and my Masters in Development Studies all from the University of Ghana.

My interest in the discourse is in the area of how we can get the local community involved in the school feeding programme by organizing them to produce the food that will be purchased to feed the children and also ensuring the over all quality of food served to the children.

I wish to know if there will be sponsorship for some one like me from a non-profit organization to participate in the conference.

    Thank you
    Margaret.

    Hello,

I recently earned my Master of Science in Nutrition and hold a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience (graduated with honors). In 2004, I traveled to South Africa with a research focus in micro-nutrient deficiencies for an experiential learning course.

In my current position as a School Nutrition Associate with NC State University, I oversee the Pre-K through 2nd Grade nutrition education programming state wide, which targets low-income populations. Prior to my current position, I also worked the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education program on enhancing their youth curriculum.

This conference would be an excellent networking opportunity and a gateway into possibility. I would be thrilled to attend and am eager to find out how I may obtain an invitation. Along with Margaret, I am also curious if sponsorship is available or possible.

    Thank You,
    Laural A. Kelly, MS
